AFTER concerns were raised by a local councillor boardings around the Beachcliff development on Penarth Esplanade have now been removed.

The blue boardings, which were put up to house a generator during construction work, were removed last week.

Penarth Councillor Anthony Ernest had urged the Vale council to "sort out'"the seafront, saying that complaints about the footpath and pollution issues on the Esplanade "needed urgent attention by the authorities".

Following the removal of the boardings he said: “After I contacted the Vale, steps were taken within a matter of days after years of filibustering and procrastination, which had given considerable distress to both local residents and visitors.

"As most Penarthians will know, a long stretch of the pavement had been blocked off with blue hoardings and contractors debris littering the area, whilst at the same time a noisy pollution-emitting generator ran 24 hours a day giving residents of nearby apartments no relief from these emissions and sleep loss noise.

"A number of residents were kind enough to let me know of their concerns and this was invaluable when I called on the Vale, as the Public Health regulator, to get this matter sorted out in a timely manner.

"The Vale will now also be able to implement the new parking slots that have been promised for many months, and hopefully this is the end of the matter."

He also welcomed the repainting of the railings and lampposts along the Esplanade and up Beach Hill which has recently been completed by the Vale council.

“I have been calling for this much needed work to be carried out for the last few years as part of the annual Pre-Easter works, but finances did not allow this until the Council had put in place several large rises in Council Tax, which only now are being partly allocated to restoring Penarth’s much loved heritage infrastructure."

He added: “That concrete kerbstones and steel reflector posts have been used for the last 13 years to mark off parking bays has been an absolute disgrace, and had a resident used similar unsympathetic materials in the Conservation Area, they would have had the wrath of the Enforcement Officers on them within days,” he said, pointing out that the Vale itself has a greatly improved record of sympathetic construction in more recent years.

“Should there be any similar or other problems in Plymouth Ward (South Penarth), I can always be contacted at Penarth 02920 702111 or by email, when I will take up these issues on residents’ behalf."
