THE ANNIVERSARY of victory over Japan day (VJ Day) was on Sunday, August 16 and one Penarth resident has been recalling her memories from 70 years ago.

Margaret "Madge" Twynham remembers living under the cloud of the second world war.

She has this photograph of people gathering in front of what was Llandaff House, also known as the 'house of mercy' at the time.

It shows people after the celebrations to mark the end of world war two.

She said she remembers dodging the bombs during the war with her sister and friend as they ran up Archer Road from the marina.

Margaret or "Madge" as she was known then, mentioned the time when nine houses were destroyed by bombing in Redlands Road, some of which were just three doors away from her own house.

She hid under the table rather than using the Anderson shelter during air raids and vividly recalled the holes in the roofs of houses created by the bombs.

As a ten and a half year old, her memories then tell of heading over to Dai Edwards' farm on Lavernock Road after this photograph was taken, near to where the Penarth fire station is now located.
