A FRUSTRATED resident has blasted council attempts to cover pot holes on his road.

Roy Young of Andrew Road, Penarth, has said repeated attempts by the council to cover up the potholes has made the situation even more dangerous for road users, particularly cyclists.

He called driving a car on the lower part of the road as "treacherous enough", and said that he imagined cycling down there as like "taking your life into your own hands".

The Vale of Glamorgan Council started a campaign in 2013 called the Big Fill which saw them pledge to fill every pothole in the county.

But Mr Young feels that the work which has been carried out to repair the potholes is unsatisfactory.

He said: "They have been patching the road time and time again since I moved in 20 years ago.

"As it has never been repaired properly it doesn't last and soon needs repairing again and again.

"Many months ago the worst patches were sprayed yellow again ready for them to be refilled.

"This was so long ago they have almost all worn away."

Mr Young says that he and his neighbours have complained on numerous occasions over the years, only to be told the local authority cannot afford to completely relay it properly.

"They are thinking about laying a walk way from Penarth Esplanade to Cardiff Bay but they supposedly can't afford to keep the roads and pavements safe they already have," he added.

"A friend of mine actually badly broke her ankle on the pavement walking home and was house bound for weeks and in a lot of pain."

Councillor Peter King, cabinet member for building services, highways and transportation on the Vale council, said the council takes the issue of maintaining their road surfaces very seriously.

"In most cases, repairing a pot hole is the quickest and most cost-effective way of returning a highway to a safe condition," he said.

"Most potholes will be repaired within 28 working days, but in high risk areas will repair them within 24 hours.

"This is, however, not all we do to ensure our highways are of a high quality.

"In the longer term the Vale of Glamorgan Council has in operation a three-year road surfacing plan to manage and prioritise resurfacing to those roads that deteriorate well below the intervention levels for pothole repairs."
