Extracts from the Penarth Times of May 27, 1966:

Despite six weeks of hard practice put in by the cadets of 1148 (Penarth) Squadron ATC, the unit was narrowly beaten in the number one Welsh Wing Drill Contest held at RAF St Athan last Sunday.

Last Saturday, Penarth Sea Cadets supported the Rhondda West Unit (TS Minerva) at the opening of their new unit in Tonypandy. Cadets from all over South Wales took part in the parade which was headed by a band of the Royal Marines.

Penarth Young Conservatives planned a full programme of varied events for the coming year, when they met at their weekly meeting on Monday.

Sully School pupils were in the news recently too, in quite another field the National Cycling Proficiency Scheme.

In Glamorgan alone, approximately 1,100 passed the test, and 14 of these were presented and successfully trained by a member of the School staff at Sully.

Sully Ladies were at home to Howard Garden's Ladies at Sully Bowling Green on Thursday of last week. It was an appalling afternoon, bouts of pouring rain, high, almost gale force windmill and the temperature far below average for the time of year.

Prefects of the Penarth County Grammar School were the guests of the Rotary Club at their meeting held last week.

What a finish to the 1965-66 darts season. In one of the most exciting climaxes ever, both the first and second division championships are still wide open.

The vital matches will be played on Friday, June 3, when Conservative B must beat St Fagans to finish in top spot. Cefn Mably B have to win their match against Conservative A to stay in the running for top honours.

Anybody visiting the Docks area last Friday or looking in at the Penarth Motor Boat and Sailing Club later in the evening might have imagined that some special event was taking place. This was not the case, however, but there were 41 boats racing (10 cruisers and 31 dinghies) in addition to a number of craft out for an evening's sail.
