A PARADE inspired by Roald Dahl is set to be one of the biggest ever at Penarth's Summer Festival.

The carnival parade is set to be one of the key attractions at this year's hotly anticipated summer festival, along with the Downhill Derby.

They will both take place on Saturday July 16, we can reveal, with members of the community invited to take part by Penarth Town Council, who are organising the events.

This year’s carnival parade will introduce two new sections, including best-dressed dog and jolliest dog, along with best costume and best group.

The parade will gather at The Kymin at 1.30pm and travel along the Esplanade, and up to the cliff top for the prize-giving.

In the Downhill Derby, riders can form a team or go solo, as long as their kart can stop when required.

The derby takes place at 3.30pm, with entrants asked to transport their home-made karts to the top of cliff hill for inspection beforehand.

Participants will also need an adult’s permission if they are under 16.

A spokeswoman for the town council said: "In a change to arrangements in recent years, the carnival parade will gather at The Kymin at 1.30pm and travel along the

Esplanade and up to the cliff top for the prize-giving.

"Doggy entrants will lead the way, so that any entrant can avoid them if they wish. We hope that this year’s parade will be one of the biggest to date."

A rock and roll dance is also set to form part of Penarth's summer festival this year on Saturday, July 9, Penarth and will be held at the Paget Rooms on Victoria Road.

Phil Haley and his Comments will perform the 1954 classic Rock Around the Clock which was originally released by Bill Haley and his Comets

Then, in 1962, a young Paul ‘Legs’ Barrett and Dave ‘Batman’ Goddard promoted their first rock’n’roll dance at the Paget Rooms with The Backbeats.

Tickets are £10 each and are available from Griffin Books in Windsor Arcade or by ringing Paul Barrett on 029 2070 4279.

Entry to the parade and Downhill Derby is free and can be made by filling in a form at penarthtowncouncil.gov.uk.
