PUPILS are celebrating record breaking GCSE results at Penarth's St Cyres School.

The results were released today as pupils descended on the school to find out what grades they had achieved.

The school has seen their level two plus pass rate increase by 12 per cent meaning 71 per cent of grades ranged from A* to C.

The proportion of pupils achieving any five C grades or above stands at 90.2 per cent.

Rebekah West said she was "chuffed" to have achieved her 14 A*s.

She said: "It makes all that hard work pay off. I am relieved to know what I have got."

Rebekah, who is also a keen musician, said she will be staying on to take Maths and Science at the school's sixth form.

Harri Herniman said he was "very pleased" with his results which included an A in Drama, C in Science and the rest being B grades.

He said: "I was prepared for the worst as everyone was and there were some I was worried about but the months of preparation have definitely paid off.

"Some people may not have got the results they wanted but no one here didn't try their absolute best."

Asked how he was feeling the night before, he said he tried to distract himself by watching the Great British Bake Off.

He will be staying on at St Cyres in an environment he knows.

St Cyres head teacher, Dr Jonathan Hicks said: "I should like to pass on my warmest congratulations to all of our pupils and to publicly thank our tremendously committed and skilled staff for all their hard work this year.

"These wonderful set of results allied to our consistently high attendance figure of 95 per cent, all show that St Cyres is providing an excellent education for local children. This is reflected in the fact that we now have a waiting list for places in September's year seven intake."

He added that the school is proud to serve the local community and will endeavour to achieve further success in future.

Enrolment for the school's sixth form takes place on Friday, August 26.
