I HAVE written previously about the problems faced by a number of constituents at the hands of Concentrix – a company hired by HMRC to conduct checks into tax credit claims.

Over the last year I have received numerous requests for assistance from people whose tax credits have been stopped or are under threat of such action, as a result of doubts raised about their claim by Concentrix.

And it seems, following recent disclosures, that the problems have been far more widespread and even more serious than previously feared.

My office has seen a marked increase over the last few weeks in people seeking help, and it is quite clear that the problems are driving people to absolute despair all around the country.

In some of the cases I have seen, constituents who are single parents have been told they are living with a ‘partner’ – despite this not being the case. It seems that Concentrix arrived at this conclusion simply by looking at the electoral roll and using details of previous tenants of the properties.

Despite clear evidence to the contrary, including home ownership documents or tenancy agreements and confirmation of the departure of former tenants, claims have not been reinstated, or have only been put back into payment after months of delays.

Meanwhile, families have been left struggling to get by, with parents unable to provide for their children without the vital financial lifeline that tax credits provide – and many forced to rely on foodbanks.

To make matters worse, people have had great difficulty in speaking with Concentrix directly, and when they do get through, have found the experience upsetting and stressful.

Just this week a whistle-blower working for Concentrix has revealed deeply concerning reports of suicidal callers, with staff not trained in any way to deal with them.

Concentrix will not have its contract with HMRC renewed, which is a positive step – but will not be of help to people who are struggling now.

Along with Labour colleagues I will be keeping up the pressure on the Government, but in the meantime if you are struggling as a result of action taken by Concentrix, please contact my office for support.
