A PENARTH bank is set to close permanently this September.

The Penarth branch of NatWest, based on Plymouth Road, has announced that it will close in September.

This is due to a decrease in-person counter services at the Penarth bank; there has reportedly been a 30 per cent decrease in average counter transactions for customers between 2018 and 2020.

A spokesman for NatWest said:

"As with many industries, most of our customers are shifting to mobile and online banking because it's faster and easier for people to manage their financial lives.

“We understand and recognise that digital solutions aren't right for everyone or every situation and that when we close branches we have to make sure that no is left behind.

"We take our responsibility seriously to support the people who face challenges in moving online, so we are investing to provide them with support and alternatives that work for them.”

South Wales Central MS Andrew RT Davies has described the planned closure of the NatWest branch in Penarth as a “bitter blow”.

He has contacted the company bosses to express his concerns and has requested a meeting to discuss the closure.

Mr Davies said:

“Bank branches provide vital services for many, including local businesses and many vulnerable residents.

“It’s a significant blow for Penarth that NatWest have announced plans to close their branch in the town.

“Many people will lose out if this closure goes ahead.  I’ve requested an urgent meeting and I hope they can be persuaded to reverse this decision.”

If the closure goes ahead, as planned, the nearest NatWest branch will be in Cardiff’s Queen Street with postal services also available via the Post Office.
