FRIENDS of Victoria Square are inviting the community to join them for an open day.

As the group approaches the end of its current project funding it is hosting an open day between 10am and midday, on Saturday, August 20, where people can learn about all the exciting things that have happened on the Square, upcoming events, and plans for the future.

There will be a cake sale, refreshments, and guided tours of the Square. Plus people who join the group on the day can meet the volunteers who have made this project - funded by National Heritage Lottery and Welsh Government - possible.

A spokesman for the group said:

"Our project has included the creation of a community garden, bog gardens, mini-pond areas, habitats for wildlife to hibernate, bulb planting, wildflower areas, planted log piles, planters made from oak logs.

"We have adopted a variable grass cutting regime, allowing certain parts of the space to be made available to wildlife, while retaining other areas for family recreation.

"We have engaged with the community by offering Victoria Square for mindfulness walks, mini beast hunts for local schools and groups, workshop space for local groups to use and for young people organisations to create their own additions to the Square.

"We have offered the facilities of Victoria Square to Age Concern for their culture club scheme.

"Friends of Victoria Square are participating in research by Cardiff University to find appropriate ways for organisations like them to participate in social prescribing by GPs and primary care providers

"For the future we will be putting into place a plan to maintain the ecology and biodiversity of the space and to ensure it continues to provide a place for people and wildlife to enjoy.

"We will continue to engage with a wider community offering Victoria Square as a place for recreation and enjoyment for all."
