A GROUP of mothers conquered mountains – metaphorically and literally – for their children.
A group of seven unstoppable mums from the Vale of Glamorgan took on Pen Y Fan on September 10, raising funds for Ysgol Y Deri, a school in Penarth catering for children with additional needs.
So far, the group – who have children attending the school – has raised more than £1,300, which will be spent on the school’s new classrooms in the annexe and the playground.
Currently, due to high demand, temporary classrooms are in place at Ysgol Y Deri to ensure it can cater to differently able children living in the Vale of Glamorgan.
One of the mothers who took part was 41-year-old Katherine Edwards who lives in Barry.
“The initial target was £500, but as things are so expensive and we wanted to be able to purchase more than one item for the children we upped the target to £2,000,” said Ms Edwards.
“There was a lot of encouragement between each other on the day, as a few of us didn’t think we’d be able to make it to the top.”
They successfully completed their challenge – the first fundraising activity that they have carried out in support of Ysgol Y Deri on Sully Road.
