AN “ICONIC” building in Penarth is undergoing maintenance work.

The Kymin, on Beach Road in Penarth, is a two-storey building dating back to the late 1700s or early 1800s.

The building, situated in the Kymin Gardens, is not listed, but is identified as a “county treasure” and – along with Penarth Pier Pavilion – plays host to numerous events throughout the year including outdoor performances.

Benthyg Penarth – a library of things – is also based at the garage at The Kymin, which is currently owned by Vale of Glamorgan Council, and the building is available for whole or partial hire for private events.

The Kymin, which is believed to be more than 200 years old, is currently undergoing required general maintenance works, which is expected to be completed by the end of November.

Penarth Times:

The work follows a high-level review of the condition of the building which revealed that certain key works are necessary to the fabric of the building in order to preserve its long-term integrity.

The work being carried out at The Kymin will ensure that the building is safe and watertight and include general stonemasonry and structural repairs.

In addition to this, carpentry repairs will also be carried out including

  • Fascia and soffit boards;
  • New rainwater goods;
  • Repairs to sash windows;
  • Repairs and redecoration of rendered areas.

Deputy leader and cabinet member for sustainable places, Cllr Bronwen Brooks, said:

“The Kymin is an iconic local building for Penarth and the Vale of Glamorgan.

“These works are required following a standard review of the building and demonstrate our commitment to keeping it in good condition so that it can remain a community asset into the future.”

The public grounds which surround The Kymin extend for nearly five acres and there are visitor facilities at The Kymin and the Gardens including:

  • Outdoor seating;
  • Shelter with seating and picnic tables;
  • Toilets;,
  • Car parking;
  • Barbeque;
  • Petanque pistes.
