ONE resident raised concerns about noise during the night time noise and dog poo, as Vale Council asked the people of Penarth what they wanted to see happen to the town’s Esplanade.

Vale Council put on an engagement exercise at Penarth’s pier on January 10, asking residents what they wanted to see happen with the highly desirable Esplanade area after council leader Lis Burnett emphasised how important it is to Penarth and the wider Vale.

The engagement focused on six key areas including parking, the street scene, the beach, events, retail, and transport.

One resident, Megan Comer, who moved to Penarth from Cardiff a year ago and lives just off Alexandra Park, said her family love it at the pier, however there can be some sticking points, including night-time noise and the sticky issue of dog faeces.

“We love it here,” said Ms Comer. “Me my husband and I moved with our child from Cardiff and we love the seaside vibe.”

Ms Comer did point out there was noise along the Esplanade at night, with youths congregating there drinking and sometimes drag racing in their cars.

She also hated the menace that is dog poo.

“Night-time teenagers hanging around the esplanade can be noisy when drunk,” said Ms Comer, “and increase the campaign against dog poo.”

Ms Comer also pointed out parking must be a pain for tourists as there is little in the area, but liked the idea of cafes being given parking spaces to set up tables.

She also suggested better links to the town and to the barrage and marina could enhance the area.

Vale council leader Cllr Lis Burnett said significant improvements had been done to the pier as the council gather more opinions.

“We are aware of how important this location is to residents and visitors to Penarth, which is why we have launched a comprehensive engagement exercise to properly understand those views,” said Cllr Burnett.

“These have been reviewed and used to shape the next stage of the engagement process, which focuses on specific themes that were raised.

“Broadly, these relate to transport, public realm improvements and arrangements around hospitality.

“Ultimately, the information gathered will help influence how this area looks and feels in future.”
