Residents rejoiced at the hospitality of the venue and were amazed at a letter read out at the beginning of the event, from the King and Queen themselves, congratulating them on their party.

A letter was sent to chief organiser Denise Price Jones from the Lord Lieutenant on behalf of the King, showing their gratitude for organising the event.

The letter began: “Both my wife and I are enormously grateful to all the communities, families, neighbours and friends who are coming together across the Commonwealth to mark our coronation.”

A chilled out celebration in Llandough.

Families came together and sat out in what turned out to be a warm summer's day as the Royal British Legion, Llandough and Leckwith branch, put on a BBQ while families lounged in picnics and kids ran around Llandough Primary playing fields across the road.

The event was organised by deputy chair of Llandough Community Council Jo Byworth-Morgan.

Keith Wilson and Anthony Wheeler were behind the grill - making sure the sausages didn’t burn. Mr Wheeler said it was a great day.

“It’s been a nice day for the local community,” said Mr Wheeler. “It’s good to see people coming out,”

Later in the day the legion had Blues singer Darren Tyson come along for a gig.

A Michelin starred celebration

Around 500 people came together at All Saints Church, Penarth, to celebrate the crowning of the King with, among other things, a dance performance by children from Anthea King School of Dance, and a little bit posher than the usual picnic grub with food prepared by Michelin starred chef James Sommerin.

Mr Sommerin served up burgers, chicken and chips while the church was opened with stalls inside and tea and coffee on offer.

Rachel Elder, administrator for the Penarth Ministry Area, said it was a brilliant community event, with everyone having a lively time.

Coronation activity at the hospice

At Marie Curie Hospice Cardiff and the Vale in Penarth, an open morning was held for volunteers, patients and staff in the Wellbeing and Support Hub, where tea, cakes and games, were enjoyed.

This was followed by a coronation-themed community activity group for people with Dementia and their carers.

Scott Davies, activities coordinator, said: “We did a few coronation related activities like making flags and bunting and a royal quiz.”

“The most wonderful street I have lived in”

That sentiment can only come from one place as Barry residents got together on Heol Corswigen.

The party, which had close to one hundred people attend was put on through the street’s WhatsApp group as well as with a little helping hand from Barry Town Council, who donated £250 to the food cost.

One of the families in attendance was TVO Lamptey, with his wife Aba.

From Ghana originally, Mr Lamptey said people back home had a keen interest in the Royals, before expressing his love for Barry.

“Ghanians have always had great interest in the British Monarchy,” said Mr Lamptey. “It is nothing new to us, but we have a good impression about it.”
