A RUGBY Club in Penarth continues to celebrate keeping going for 100 years after beginning to commemorate the anniversary in September.

Old Penarthians RFC was established in 1924 and started celebrating its centenary year in September 2023.

In a fresh twist on egg chasing, the club will be hosting a centenary rugby festival over the Easter weekend where the Presents invitational XV, youth and women’s teams will play against teams from across South Wales.

Speaking to the Penarth Times Tony Crimp, club president said: “We are coming up to the Easter break where the club is celebrating the first team having a team of 15 playing Welsh academicals.

“The youth team will be playing the Crawshaw’s team, while the women’s team will be playing local rivals Llandaff North which will all be over the Easter weekend.”

The Presidents Invitational XV will play the Welsh Academics on Good Friday, March 30, while on Easter Saturday, March 31 the youth XV will play Crawshays while the women’s team against Dowlais.

The Easter event will be followed by a cap presentation on Tuesday, April 9, and a chairman’s centenary lunch on Friday, April 19.

The club hosted a club dinner in a marquee with Welsh rugby legends Gerald Davies and Gareth Edwards alongside sports broadcaster Phil Steele in September.

The chairman’s lunch in April will be held at the Old Penarthians clubhouse with Welsh coach Rob Howley as a guest speaker.

Old Penarthians RFC posted on social media, said: “We are lucky enough this year to have current Welsh coach Rob Howley as our guest speaker.

“With his career highs and lows, he will no doubt be a hugely entertaining and informative speaker.”

The Easter events will be followed by a further two centenary events in three months with another rugby tournament and ball.

On Saturday, June 8, there will be a centenary sevens tournament followed by a centenary celebration ball at Mercure Holland House Hotel in Cardiff on Saturday, June 24.

The ball will celebrate 100 years of Old Penarthians RFC and will mark the end of the club's nine-month celebrations.
