Funding has been awarded for further upkeep of historic walls in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has agreed to extend funding to Cowbridge Charter Trust (CCT) to continue the maintenance of the town's historic walls.

From April 1, 2024 until March 31, 2029, CCT will receive £1,500 annually from the Corporate Grants Budget for its specialist repair work.

This follows the repair of the medieval-era town walls following their partial collapse in 2008, with a grant of £60,000 then awarded to CCT to restore the Grade II listed walls.

Cllr Bronwen Brooks, deputy leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council and cabinet member for sustainable places, said: "We are delighted to be able to provide this funding to keep Cowbridge town walls both safe and in an attractive condition."

She added that CCT "has worked hard to maintain the town walls for many years with the help of council funding, and we hope that the commitment to further funding will assist with the necessary work needed."

Cllr Brooks concluded by recognising the importance of the medieval town walls as a "part of Cowbridge’s rich history," that needs to be protected for future generations.
