VAUGHAN Gething, our AM, rightly points out that the referendum has ‘galvanised some of the most unsavoury behaviour in our society’.

Unfortunately some of it is within the membership of his own party, which increasingly resembles mud wrestling over the corpse of a once great socialist party.

We cannot wait any longer for a functioning opposition as Brexit is in the nature of a revolution that has killed off the old two-party order, under which a handful of floating voters in a few marginal constituencies held sway: this, of course, being the reason why many of those who voted in the referendum often don’t vote in elections.

Consequently we either change our democratic process or we lose our democracy to a one-party Tory state.

Labour MPs must recognise their obligation to their constituents, and to all 16 million Remain voters, and unite under Angela Eagle, not only to implement Labour party policies but also to join forces with all other opposition parties to demand the restoration of local government funding, so that English schools can be returned to local authority control instead of becoming cash cows for businessmen.

Owen Smith and all other Welsh Labour MPs, alongside concert with AMs, could ensure that the Welsh Assembly is the model of government for Greater Manchester and Greater Birmingham, so that all regions have the devolution of powers, and budgets, to redress the balance of power with Westminster and the City of London, and root out any corruption that puts many off voting in elections because, unlike the referendum, they feel their votes will not make any difference.
