SULLY Sailing Club's Summer series began with the inclusion of the annual Laser Cup integral to the first race.

Thirteen boats took part with a number of Laser dinghies eligible to compete for the Cup. The wind was blowing gently from the South East at a rate of four knots.

Neil Brookes, Steve Marshall and Danny Powell all made good starts in their Lasers as the start signal sounded.

Danny Powell took the lead in the Laser Cup as the boats rounded the first mark.

However, as the boats rounded the second mark, Danny appeared to head on the wrong course allowing Neil and Steve to close the gap.

The three lasers drew alongside each other, three abreast along the leg towards the final mark of the first lap.

Danny rounded the final mark first closely followed by Steve and Neil.

With the wind direction changing towards the South it became possible to complete the beat to the start of the second lap and to the first mark on one tack. Positions remained the same for the rest of the race with Danny building up a lead to win the Laser Cup by a margin of 44 seconds over Steve with Neil finishing a further 37 seconds behind.

With the application of the Portsmouth Yardstick to provide handicap adjustments, the first race of the summer series was won by Danny Powell followed by Steve Marshall and Ceri Jones in his Mirror dinghy.

The second race was also won by Danny Powell with Steve Marshall in second place. Jamie Rhys-Martin stormed to third place in a Laser Radial.
