COCONUT shells and grass skirts were the order and dress of the day at Windsor Penarth Bowling Club on its Hawaiian day.

The clubhouse bedecked with colourful leis and palm trees, it was a day to remember. Pina Coladas went to Brian Rogers, D Davies, Pat Dorrell, A Morgan, Judy Davies and Carole Lewis.

In the senior citizens’ Alliance League, the Windsor OAPs lost to Whitchurch by 17 shots. There were wins for A Holmes, M Dorrell, S Latham, K Trenchard and D Stafford, D Adams, L Davies, M Cucceniello.

In the ‘Munro Cup’, with Windsor at present top of the table, the leaders travelled to play Dinas Powys Murch bowling club. A nine shots victory and 12 points accrued, saw Windsor stay top.

Once again, outstanding performances came from Steve Ellard and Phil Gooding.

In the quarter finals of the ‘Alun Martins Cup’ for two club rinks, saw ‘Barry Romilly’ visit the Penarth Robinswood stadia. In a very entertaining match, Windsor prevailed and look forward with confidence to the semi-final.

B Rogers; E Thorne; R Hudson; K Macleod: 20-17

R Flitney; C Burton; M Hope: 24-11

A glorious Saturday saw the continuation of the private greens’ league matches and once again, with Captain Roger’s boys challenging for top spot, ‘Barry Plastics’ provided the opposition. Prior to the game, the captain’s colour blindness played into the opponents’ hands, as the green markers got precedent over the red.

Still, undeterred, Brian’s boys gave him full support and victory was achieved, and 11 points.

B Rogers; P Gooding; E Thorne; M Woodcock: 20-20

A Morgan; M Woodcock; M Hope; S Close: 20-17

M Matthews; F Coleman: R Flitney; K McLeod: 35-8

J Price; A Dudley; C Burton; R Hudson: 16-18

With the last named recording their second loss of the week, it is to be hoped that the return of unavailable players, absent for personal and somewhat nefarious reasons, will negate their losses.

Last but by no means least, the blue stockinged ladies have been in wonderful form. One’s heart goes out to their local rivals at Rectory Road, Penarth who were swept away by the brilliance of the Windsor ‘Gals’ and defeated on all three rinks.

C Lewis; P Dorell; V Flitney; D Thomas: 17-13

M Morgan; R Evans; L Thomas; M Owen: 18-9

M Huntley; M Scarrett; D Roper; K Dyer: 19-8

Rumour has it that Trish and her fellow players went twice to church seeking divine intervention to prevent such a future debacle. Likewise the ladies of Rumney Gardens felt the full force of arguably Wales’s finest ladies ensemble, as they recorded yet another victory. Just to temper the elation, a defeat against Dinas Powys under the lovely Olwen and the Letts twins brought them down to earth.

The world ranked and current British Isles Champion, Jason Greenslade of Rectory Road began his defence of that title in the county finals, held on the superb Windsor greens.

His opponent was Penarth born-and-bred Richard Janes, who began his bowling at the local ‘Belle Vue’ club and now plies his trade at Dinas Powys.

This talented bowler was never headed throughout the game and claimed victory over Greenslade with yet another two magnificent drawing woods. So, indeed it’s Richard and not Jason who goes on to Llandrindod Wells and hopefully further glory.
