AT THE first United World Karate Championships held in Slovenia last month, the Welsh Kyokushinkai Karate Club in Cogan, representing Karate Wales Governing Body, achieved two medals in the Kata category.

Lee Costa 7th Dan chief instructor won a gold medal and Mike Humphries 4th Dan achieved silver.

Going from strength to strength, this weekend at the second Kyokushin Karate Open held in Barry’s Memorial Hall, the Welsh Kyokushinkai karate club in Cogan, competed with a squad of 24 students, achieving a total of 13 top medals, four golds, three silver and six bronze.

With special mention to Trinity Hutchinson who achieved two gold medals in the two categories she competed, Kata and fighting. She fought so professionally that she made every fight seem effortless.

Keana Hutchinson, 10, and Detroit Hagon, seven, were awarded with a surprise trophy to the most spirited male and female competitors on the day.

The Kyokushin Karate Competition was one of the highest standard seen in Wales where top Kyokushin Associations participated, including MOKKO and IKO from the Welsh Karate Governing Body.

Independent Kyokushin Karate Union England (IKKU), along with associations from Ireland, Scotland and the Scandinavian countries also competed.

The Kyokushinkai Cogan Karate Club is a proud member of the Karate Wales Governing Body. Karate Wales over the last three years has participated in both national and international competitions and is proving to be the most successful karate sporting governing body in Wales.
