PENARTH swimmer Ieuan Lloyd will represent Team GB as he heads to the Rio Olympics this summer.

Ieuan will be joined by fellow City of Cardiff Swimming Club member and British Champion, Chloe Tutton.

It seems hardly possible that the London Olympics 2012 was four years ago, and that the 2016 Olympics in Rio is a mere four months away. With this in mind, the best swimmers in Britain converged on the Tollcross International Pool in Glasgow this week to compete at the British Championships which doubled as the Olympic Trials.

The City of Cardiff Swimming Club were represented by seven swimmers – Ieuan Lloyd, Xavier Mohammed, Otto Putland, James Lewis, Chloe Tutton, Harriet Jones and Annaliese Beynon and what a great week they had.

Chloe Tutton was in scintillating form in her main event, the 200m breaststroke. She dominated the swim from the start, winning gold, becoming British Champion and setting a new British and Welsh record of 2:22.34.

She backed it up with a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke again setting a new Welsh record and personal best time of 1:07.61.

Ieuan Lloyd, who represented Team GB in London 2012, has struggled to find his top form since then, but really came back to his best here. He swam in four events, making finals in them all and setting season best times.

His best result was a second place in the 200m IM in a time of 1:59.58, backed up by seventh place in the 400m freestyle, (3:49.97), sixth in the 100m freestyle in a personal best time (49.86) and the same again in the 200m freestyle (1:48.23).

Xavier Mohammed was another medal winner for the club, winning a bronze medal in 100m backstroke in 54.47, a new personal best time and just outside the Welsh record for this event. He followed this fantastic swim with a silver medal and a best time of 1:58.47 in 200m backstroke, and yet another best time in the 200m IM where he finished in fifth place (1.59.99).

Otto Putland secured a brace of season best times in the 100m backstroke in 56.84 and 50.70 in 100m freestyle

The team also included three junior swimmers with Annaliese Beynon making her debut at a major meet. She swam in the 50m and 100m freestyle setting times of 27.08 and 59.50 respectively.

Harriet Jones and James Lewis were part of a group of swimmers in a Target Tokyo set of heats and finals. Both swimmers made the finals in their events with James setting PBs of 1:04.52 and 2:17.01 in the 100m and 200m breaststroke.

Harriet won a gold medal on the last day of the meet in the 100m butterfly in a PB of 1:00.18. Earlier in the week she won bronze in 200m butterfly with a PB of 2:13.40.

Rounding up the week head coach Graham Wardell said “I was thrilled that, after the hard work of the last seven months, our swimmers were at their best on the biggest occasion in the domestic calendar. The Cardiff swimmers showed tenacity, toughness and great technique as they raced to place themselves in consideration for the Olympic team”.
