Dinas Powys recorded their first clean sweep of the season, with welcome victories for all three Saturday league sides.

The first XI beat Ponthir comfortably at Bryn-y-Don, as an opening burst from Olly Hurley (3-32) and Casey Hughes (2-35) did the bulk of the damage.

Dinas were in total control having reduced the visitors to 57-5 on a good pitch, and Ponthir could only muster 122 after winning the toss and electing to bat.

Stuart Jones (3-10) was typically miserly in the middle overs, and young Ken Marlow picked up his 100th wicket for the club late on.

In response, Dinas reached their target for the loss of just one wicket inside 22 overs, with wicketkeeper Sajan Rana smashing an unbeaten 80 in just 55 balls.

A more watchful eight in 42 balls for big Al Clark was the perfect foil as the home side recorded their third win of the season in South East Wales League Division Four.

Rana’s fellow opener Lloyd DiMauro (22) was the only wicket to fall.

It wasn’t quite so straightforward for the seconds, who were pushed until the very last over by hosts Christchurch.

On a scorching day and a fine Ferndale pitch, Dinas chose to bat and began in careful fashion, reaching 59-2 after 20 overs.

The Villagers were indebted to in-form James Hiscocks (56) for digging his side out of a deepening hole, his half-century providing valuable impetus to an innings in danger of stagnating.

When Hiscocks and opener Lewis Clarke (36) both departed in the 33rd over, with the visitors on 142-4, it was time to kick-on.

Jack Houghton (30) and skipper Gareth Evans (40no) duly obliged with some lusty blows, taking the Dinas score to a much more competitive 212-5 off 40 overs.

Chasing, Christchurch began extremely positively, latching on to some unusually wayward bowling and making the very most of lethargy in the field.

The home side looked well on track having raced to 93-0 after 15 overs, but the introduction of Buckets Todd-Bennett (3-27) and Ryan Mullins (4-25) turned the game on its head.

Fine spells by both young seamers wrestled back the initiative for the Villagers, with Mullins particularly impressive in the sweltering summer sun.

From there on in Dinas always looked favourites, but an impressive knock from the Christchurch captain kept his side in the hunt right to the end, Thomas eventually holing out in the 40th over for 55.

Tidy spells from Hiscocks and Richard Morgan kept the pressure on, before Clarke polished off the opposition for 193 with two late wickets.

An entertaining game that ebbed and flowed ended in a 19-run victory for the seconds, who sit in mid-table of South East Wales League Division Seven.

Elsewhere on the Common, Dinas Thirds bagged an impressive win of their own against Cardiff Fourths, avenging a heavy defeat earlier in the season.

Having won the toss and elected to field, the Villagers broke through with the score on 39, skipper Andy Hurley bagging the dangerous Cardiff opener.

And from there on, Dinas took control, reducing their opponents to 72-5, which quickly led to 91 all out.

Hurley (3-23), Olly Banks (3-11) and Vishesh Argarwal (2-12) were the main Dinas destroyers, with a solid display in the field a useful support act.

Last week’s hat-trick hero Simon Wilton was surplus to requirements as wickets tumbled at regular intervals.

The Villagers made a shaky start in pursuit of their meagre target, slipping to 37-5 with the fall of Ryan Taylor for 10.

But fortunately for the home side, Argarwal (26no) and Nathan Waite (19no) steadied the rocking ship and took Dinas to the finish line with little drama.

A solid five-wicket win lifts the battling thirds to fourth in Division 10, but still some way off the top two.
