PARKRUNS are always special in themselves, but a recent run at Cosmeston Lakes was a little more special with the Run Wales Celebration Relay baton coming into town.

The Run Wales Celebration Relay "Celebration Baton" is currently making its way round every parkrun in Wales to celebrate social running, and it just hit Penarth.

Darran Moran (Vale Runners) brought the baton from Barry Island parkrun to Cosmeston Lakes, where Hillary James (Vale Runners) ran the parkrun with the relay baton.

It was then handed over to Rich Carr (Run Grangetown) to take it on to Grangemoor parkrun.

Kay Rogers, of Vale of Glamorgan run group Beyond Running Fitness, described the journey as the baton hit the south coast.

“If you are not totally aware of what is going on the idea behind the baton is to promote social running with a celebration relay around all the parkruns in Wales,” said Kay.

“The baton started its travels in Nova Prestatyn on July 2, 2022.

“Recently the Barry running club Seriously Mad Runners had the baton at Barry Island and passed it onto Vale Runners, another running club in Barry.

“They were so attached to the baton it made an appearance in one of their Tuesday bleep test sessions.

“They then decided to run with it from Barry Island leaving at 7.30am Saturday morning for the run to Cosmeston Lakes ready for the start of parkrun.

“Darran Moran, Vale Runners run leader, led the baton charge and handed the baton over to Hilary Davis James, also a run leader with Vale and a former race director at Cosmeston Lakes.

“She then ran around the parkrun with it.

“Having met up with the baton at Gnoll it was lovely to see it progress to my two local parkruns and be in the hands of people I know and sometimes run with.”

Parkrun is always looking for runners and volunteers! To get involved go to Cosmeston Lakes parkrun Facebook page. The run takes place every Saturday 9am at Cosmeston Lakes.
