On Sunday, October 15, The Barry Amateur Swimming Club held their Ray Sutton Cup Gala.

Pre Covid this had been an annual event for the club, but for various reasons this was our first home event for a few years.

Four other swimming clubs attended the gala including Abergavenny, Pontypridd, Penarth and Rhondda.

It was a very enjoyable competition and one which all the swimmers enjoyed.

Rhondda Swimming Club Came first in many events and won the Gala with 295 points, with Cwmbran taking second place with 239 points.

This was followed by Barry in third place with 182 points. Abergavenny Club was fourth followed by Penarth Club.

We were very pleased to welcome Penarth to this gala as they have not managed to compete in any swimming events for some time, and it was very encouraging to know that they have now started building up a competition team.

Penarth Times:

We were also very happy to be placed in third place over all, as we are also in the process of rebuilding our strength as a club.

Our swimmers had some very good swims, with some outstanding results.

Our 14 swimmers did very well in the Medley Relay races gaining two second and two third places.

Also, in the U14 age group Daniel Tailby and Sam King had a second place in all their races.

Our U10 age group swimmer, Jack Rees won his Freestyle race, Taylah Lewis Bateman also won her Breaststroke race in the U16 group, while Halle-Marie Curran came second in her U12 Backstroke race.

Our U16 Boys did very well too, with Alfie Sargeant winning an individual first and second place in Freestyle and Butterfly.

Charlie Bowmer also gained a second place in Backstroke.

We had several individual third places with the team working hard in the Mixed Relays.

We hope to build on Sunday’s success and hold two home galas next year, repeating the Ray Sutton Gala in the Autumn and holding a Town Mayor’s Cup Gala in the earlier part of the year.
